I recently went on a food trail across Uttar Pradesh, and let me tell you—this journey was nothing short of unforgettable. Each city had its own flavor, its own identity, and its own must-try dish. If you're someone who believes in exploring culture through taste, then UP should be on your foodie bucket list.
I started in Lucknow, and the first name on my list was Tunday Kababi. This 100+ year old kebab shop has become a legend in itself. The galouti kebabs literally melt in your mouth, rich with spices and perfectly cooked. Served with paratha and mint chutney, I promise you, it's an experience.
You can’t leave Lucknow without trying Awadhi Biryani. Unlike Hyderabadi, this version is subtle, cooked in dum (slow heat) and full of rich aroma from saffron, rose water, and ghee. Each bite feels like royalty on a plate.
After Lucknow, I headed to Varanasi. This ancient city is not just spiritual, it's also flavorful. I tried the iconic Banarasi Paan here—it’s more than a paan; it's a cultural experience. Made with silver leaf, gulkand, and a mix of secret ingredients, it's served with pride and folded with a smile.
From Agra to Kanpur to Prayagraj, one thing you’ll find everywhere is chaat. Spicy, tangy, crunchy—UP's street food is in a league of its own. I tried Aloo Tikki Chaat, Papdi Chaat, and even Tokri Chaat. The best part? Each city adds its own twist. In Kanpur, samosas are huge and stuffed with masala potatoes and dry fruits!
In winters, especially in Varanasi, I was lucky to taste Malaiyo—a cloud-like sweet made from dew milk foam. And of course, how can we forget Agra’s Petha? Soft, translucent, and often flavored with rose or paan essence, it’s the sweet pride of Agra.
Food in UP is not just about taste—it’s about emotion, culture, and heritage. Every dish has a story, and every bite felt like a journey into the heart of North India. If you love exploring India through its food, Uttar Pradesh deserves your attention (and appetite)!
