Onam, the most vibrant and cherished festival of Kerala, will be celebrated on 27 August 2025 (Wednesday). Rooted in mythology, it honours the homecoming of the beloved King Mahabali — a ruler who once brought a golden era to Kerala. The festival unites people across caste, religion, and culture in celebration of gratitude and abundance.
According to ancient Hindu mythology, King Mahabali was a generous and just ruler loved by his people. However, the gods grew jealous of his popularity. Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, visited Mahabali and asked for three steps of land. With each step, he covered the earth, sky, and finally pushed Mahabali to the netherworld. But Vishnu granted him one wish — to visit his people once every year. This day is celebrated as Onam.
Onam is a 10-day festival starting with Atham and culminating on Thiruvonam. People clean and decorate their homes, create intricate flower rangolis called Pookalam, prepare elaborate feasts known as Onasadya, and dress in traditional attire. The spirit of the festival lies in unity, sharing, and cultural pride.
From Pulikali (tiger dance) to Vallamkali (boat races), the festivities are diverse and colorful. Schools and offices remain closed, and communities gather for temple rituals, music, and dance performances. It’s not just a festival; it’s an emotional celebration of Kerala’s legacy.
Search trends during August show a sharp rise in queries like "Onam date", "Onam sadya recipes", "Onam wishes", and "Onam dress ideas". In 2025, with more cultural pride and digital reach, Onam is trending not only in India but among the Malayali diaspora worldwide.
